Overview
The Indonesian National Police (INP) is the national police force of the Republic of Indonesia, responsible for law enforcement, maintaining public order, and combating crime throughout the archipelago.
History
1946
The Indonesian police was established following independence. Police units fought in the National Revolution against Dutch colonial forces and helped suppress the communist revolt in Madiun.
1960s
The police were brought under the control of the Armed Forces Chief during this period.
1999
Following major political reforms, the Indonesian National Police formally separated from the military in April 1999.
2000
The separation from the military was formally completed, establishing the INP as a fully independent law enforcement agency headquartered in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
2001
The force transitioned to British-style ranks in subsequent organisational reforms.
